Porosity and Sorting

In this semester, I have a class that I starting to get interested in, which is Earth Science. From the first day until now, we lean and research about human impacts on sediment deposition, sediment and water, underground aquifers. These days, we just started our group project about porosity and sorting. To start this lab report, we should understand about the theories that we studied. Before we start the lab, we should write our hypothesis based on what we learn previously. As our lab is to realize holding the amount of water is depends on the size and sorting of beads and rocks particles. Based on this topic sentence and the hypothesis, we started our lab which is measure the volume of water, volume of beads or rocks, and the porosity of its own. In the order of  large beads, small beads, mixed beads, and poorly-sorted rocks, we got the results that large beads allows to hold most volume of water poured into the cup and the poorly-sorted rocks allows to hold the least volume of water, in the spaces between the rock particles. Also, to get the results of total volume of beads, subtracting from the volume of water into the cup with no beads and each volume of water poured into the cup with beads that we measured. As large beads have the characteristic of having largest spaces between the beads among the other beads and rocks, the large beads have the highest porosity which is 92.31%, small beads with 74.42%, mixed beads with 50%, and poorly-sorted rocks have the lowest porosity of 44.23%. Through this experiment, we realized that the size and sorting of beads and rocks affects the amount of water to hold, which related to the porosity. Moreover, this could affect the watershed, including the amount of groundwater and runoff. When the watershed created by the amount of precipitation hits on the surface and below, the size or the sorting of the particles affect the watershed production. Based on our experiment, more watershed will creates on the soil with small particles, which allows to hold less water and runoff easier to produce more watershed near the rivers and streams. Therefore, the watershed caused by the lower porosity of water to hold affects the level of high saturation, depending on the size and sorting of the particles. To conclude my paragraph, learning new things in science, related to our nature, stimulate my brain to have critical thinking and get more interests in science.
